One major advantage of Skyrim, to me, is that the game is a lot more stable than Oblivion and performs better while looking better. Skyrim has a bigger modding scene but the base game is worse, to sum it up. Better Dungeons somewhat helps with Oblivions generic dungeons (compared to Skyrim).

Realistic Leveling is another great mod and so is Maskar's Oblivion Overhaul. I recommend Vanilla Combat Enhanced and the magic mod (can't remember its name) from the same author. Spell creation opens up a lot more possibilities as a mage. Blocking attacks in Oblivion feels much better. I personally find Oblivion's combat superior as well. There is little to no need for quest mods and such. The quests in Oblivion are infinitely better (just compare the Mages' Guild to the College of Winterhold questline.Skyrim's is a huge disappointment), and that is the primary reason I prefer it.

Oblivion looks worse than Skyrim but with a good mod setup it's perfectly fine. Streamlined, convenient, beautiful and yet an empty shell. But after years passed nothing is left there even with mods. Dragons, killcams, equippable spells, perks and the like are fun when you play for the first few times. But when I have a spare time to play I always prefer Oblivion, Morrowind or even New Vegas. It also has overally better and longer quests (DB guild quest line is considered by many to be the best ever created by Bethesda, they outdone themselves) and so modders put their efforts in that direction too - creating more content.īut to answer your question: gameplay is always a personal choice, combat is better in Skyrim I think, worlds are the same since they depend on the engine which hasn't changed much (though I prefer Oblivion's rumors system to Skyrim's predefined scripted scenes). Oblivion has excellent mechanics by default (attributes, more skills, more unique spell effects and spellmaking, custom enchantments, disposition and persuasions, meaningful guild ranks, etc.) that don't require lot of additional mods. It has plethora of excellent quests, dungeons, new worldspaces and story mods, something that Skyrim is far behind unfortunately. Putting aside body, armor, hairs and other similar cosmetic mods which are plenty for both games, I have a feeling that Skyrim's modding is more gameplay (mechanics) oriented while Oblivion's is more about additional content.
